9. LSU’s 51-0 win over ULM is the second-largest margin of victory for the Tigers in the Miles era. The Tigers defeated North Texas by a score of 56-3 on Oct. 29, 2005 in Miles’ first season as head coach.

The Series: Alabama leads 45-23-5

It’s the fourth straight year that the game will be televised on CBS … It’s only the fifth time in school history that LSU plays Auburn and Alabama in consecutive games, but just the third time that the Alabama game comes after the Auburn contest. The other times it’s happened came in 1970 (LSU won both games) and 2007 (LSU won both games) … LSU also played Auburn and Alabama in consecutive games in 1903 and 1927, but the Alabama game came first in both of those years … It’s the fourth straight year that both teams go into the game ranked in the Top 25 … The team that has led at halftime has gone on to win just twice in the last seven meetings. LSU and Tennessee meet for the 31st time on Saturday with the Vols holding a 20-7-3 advantage in the series that dates back to the 1925 season … LSU has won two straight and three of the last four games the Vols, including a 21-14 victory in the 2007 SEC Championship Game – the last time the teams played … The last two times the teams have played in Tiger Stadium the game has gone to overtime … Tennessee won 30-27 in a Monday night overtime game in 2005 … Prior to that, LSU beat the Vols, 38-31, in overtime in 2000 … LSU is 3-8-2 all-time against Tennessee in Tiger Stadium … Since the start of the 2000 season, LSU is 4-2 against Tennessee … LSU coach Les Miles is 2-1 against Tennessee … No coach in LSU history has three wins against Tennessee – Miles and Nick Saban both have two wins against the Vols as head coach of the Tigers.

LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis held the same position at Tennessee for 14 years from 1995-2008 … Chavis, who spent a total of 20 years with the Vols, coached linebackers and the defensive line at Tennessee from 1989-1994 before being promoted to defensive coordinator for the 1995 season … LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson coached the wide receivers at Tennessee in 2009 … LSU administrative intern Dominque Stevenson started at middle linebacker for Chavis and the Vols from 1999-2001 … Tennessee coach Derek Dooley spent five years at LSU on Nick Saban’s staff from 2000-04 … Dooley coached tight ends, special teams and running backs during his time with the Tigers … Tennessee defensive backs coach Terry Joseph was a graduate assistant on Les Miles’ staff in 2006 … Tennessee linebackers coach Lance Thompson coached at LSU for two years in 2002 and 2003.

The last three times the teams have met, a fourth quarter or overtime score has determined the outcome. In 2006, LSU scored with 9 seconds left to beat the Vols, 28-24, in Knoxville. In that contest, JaMarcus Russell connected with Early Doucet in the back of the endzone for the score to complete the comeback. A year later at the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, LSU CB Jonathan Zenon returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown at the 9:54 mark in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers the lead for good at 21-14. LSU LB Darry Beckwith intercepted a Tennessee pass at the Tiger 7-yard line with less than three minutes left to secure the victory that sent LSU to the national championship game that year. In 2005, Tennessee scored 17 fourth quarter points and then added a TD in overtime to beat LSU, 30-27, in what was Les Miles’ first game in Tiger Stadium.

The Series: First Meeting

LSU and West Virginia meet for the first time in football … LSU is 1-3 all-time against current members of the Big East with the only win coming against Syracuse by a 13-10 count in the 1965 Sugar Bowl … LSU is 1-1 vs. Syracuse, 0-1 vs. Rutgers, and 0-1 vs. Cincinnati … LSU last played a member of the Big East in the 1989 Hall of Fame Bowl, losing to Syracuse 23-10 … LSU’s first game against a current member of the Big East came in 1897 when the Tigers dropped a 26-0 decision to Cincinnati … LSU returns the trip to West Virginia next year as the Tigers and Mountaineers will square off on Sept. 24 in Morgantown.

The West Virginia contest marks LSU’s second game against a top 25 opponent this year. LSU opened the season with a 30-24 win over No. 18 North Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game in Atlanta. The West Virginia game represents the first time since 1991 that LSU has faced two Top 25 non-conference opponents during the regular-season. In 1991, LSU lost to No. 20 Texas A&M, 45-7, in College Station and then fell to No. 1 Florida State, 27-16, in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 26. To take it another step, LSU hasn’t faced two ranked non-conference opponents during the first month of a season since 1988 when LSU opened the year with a 27-0 win over No. 10 Texas A&M in Tiger Stadium and then followed that with a 36-33 loss to No. 18 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

LSU will open the 2011 season against Pac-10 power Oregon in Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, vice chancellor and director of athletics Joe Alleva announced on Tuesday.

Billed as the “Cowboys Classic”, LSU and Oregon will square off for the fourth time in football in what is the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The Tigers and Ducks also played in 1932, 1934 and 1977, with LSU leading the series 2-1.

The LSU-Oregon contest will mark the second consecutive year in which the Tigers will open the season at a neutral site and on prime time national television. LSU opened the 2010 season last week with a 30-24 victory over North Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.

The LSU-Oregon game has been slotted for a prime time kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 on either ESPN or ABC.

“This will be a great opportunity to showcase our football program on national television against a quality opponent from the Pac-10,” Alleva said. “Cowboy Stadium is perhaps the finest football venue in the country and to be able to bring our team and our fans to that facility will be a tremendous experience for everyone involved.

“The Dallas area also has one of the largest LSU alumni bases outside Louisiana so it will be exciting to bring our football program and the LSU football experience to the state of Texas for a game.”

The 2011 season opener will mark LSU’s first game in Texas since the 2002 Cotton Bowl when the Tigers dropped a 35-20 decision to Texas. LSU hasn’t played a regular season game in Texas since the 1995 season-opener against Texas A&M in College Station.

In other football scheduling news, LSU has added games to future schedules, hosting Western Kentucky in 2011, Idaho in 2012, Furman and UAB in 2013, Georgia Southern in 2014, Jacksonville State in 2015, and South Alabama in 2016. LSU also announced that its game against Southern Miss, originally scheduled for next year, has been moved to the 2016 season.
